ReplyDeleteGiven the manner the statistics are described...I would "guess" it was the first third of the last century...
The salaries sound about right, and the use of the phrase INSANE ASYLUM (which today, we all know is either the SOUTH side...or the judicial system here) is just so wonderfully politically INCORRECT for the near past.
Add to that the mention of police WAGON...sounds horse-drawn to me...lol.
Interesting ststs to say the least...and I'd wager crime was a LOT lower (among other things).
Good post.
Stay safe.

ReplyDeleteHey, I was the ONLY guess...ROFL!
(blame it on a past-life experience...)
Yeah, all the telephones in use were SINGLE DIGIT numbers, so calling someone was REAL EASY!
Don't forget...they had PARTY LINES back then...ONE line for a LOT of people...cheap way to get the gossip...heh, heh.
As to the "condition" of the city...seemed in a LOT BETTER SHAPE in 1903, didn't it?
I know OUR house wasn't built yet...was still FARM LAND (and a HELLUVA LOT quieter, I'll wager)!
I honestly enjoyed reading the data...that was cool.
Stay safe.

Congratulations, Bob, yours was the closest guess - LOL
The information was from 1903, and was included in Mayor Henry C. Berghoff's annual report on the condition of the City of Fort Wayne.
One thing that surprised me about this was the number of telephone calls received by the department. I didn't think the telephone was in widespread use at that time, yet there were almost as many calls as there were citizens in the city at that time.
The full report can be viewed here:

The report for 1900 can be found here:
