Should Drugs Be Legalized?

Robert Enders has a post on the Libertarian Party web-site calling for an end to America’s “War on Drugs.”

I would like to direct your attention there, as I would really enjoy hearing other people’s thoughts on this subject.

If you wish to comment on this please do so at the Libertarian site, rather than mine, since they originated the discussion.

  2. Personally, I think it's rude to steal someomne elses thread and try to pull it to your own site. If you find what they say to be interesting enough to comment, then the comment should be left with the person who initiated it.

    However, Bird*, since both you and Bob G. are regular stalkers - I mean followers - of my blog, I guess it's okay for you to break the rules. By the way Bird*, you never did tell us your opinion on the legalization of drugs?

  5. Bob, you seem to know at least as much about my neighborhood as I do just from reading the police blotter and listening to the scanner. You have earned the title!

    By the way, I think I discovered a way to automatically garner comments - just tell people not to comment.

  6. Phil:
    This is "off-topic", but I think you'll get a kick out of this:

    http://maps.google.com/

    Check this out...you can virtually drive" down the streets and do a real "360" of a neighborhood.
    I "drove" around your block....
    Aside from YOUR house *and your house alone), it's a lot like MY area...not all that "impressive".

    Also, the mapping looks dated, as the trees were still up. Can you provide a timeline or guess at WHEN the maps were made?
    Thanks.

    Bob

  7. Bob;

    Another good map is http://www.yellowpages.com/maps

    I have wondered about the dating of these maps but haven’t figured it out yet. If you compare these two different map sites, you will see a lot of differences. The one that I listed shows the trees in full bloom, and the row of trees along the SE of my property has not been removed yet, so they were taken at least as far back as May of this year.

    Looking at the site you listed, I notice the trees are bare and the above mentioned trees have not been cut yet, so this is a bit older. Looking here at the house across Warsaw street from me and just a bit to the south, I notice several vehicles parked there. I believe it has been quite some time before those vehicles were being parked there, so I would not be surprised to find that this photo was even older.

    What I like about the Yellow Pages site is that it allows you to view at an angle (Bird’s Eye), as if you were flying a plane over the neighborhood. But this capability does not seem to work at all locations. Also, on the close up view it seems to be less blurred. But the site you mentioned often allows greater zooming. Also, there seems to be better color definition on your site.

    Check out the Kremlin on both sites for a comparison. Yellow Pages seems less blurry at its greatest zoom capability there than the Google Map does. But the Google map then allows one more zoom after this. Although the lines are more fuzzy, the green roof top and golden capped domes are much more apparent. What’s really fun to do is visit world airports with these maps. There are times where the picture has been good enough to read the company logo on the side of the planes.

    I guess they both have their advantages, so for spies like us it’s always good to have options!

  8. Bob;

    After my last reply, I spent a bit more time looking at these maps. I believe that the last time a landmark change was made in my neighborhood was a house being torn down that was across Warsaw Street from me and a half block to the south. I distinctly recall this house being torn down because another local blogger (and neighbor of mine) known as Credo (http://dowdellresearch.blogspot.com/) stopped to argue with the man who was bulldozing it. I am pretty certain that was in the summer of 2006, but might have been 2005. Anyway, on the Google map this house is removed but the lot is still bare, so this map was taken the following winter. On the Yellow Pages site, grass is already covering the lot.

    I also found another advantage to the Google site in that it is circular in it’s coverage. On the Yellow Pages site, when you hit the eastern or western limits, you must scroll all the way back across the map to continue. The Google map just automatically circulates like a real globe.

    What I wonder is whether all parts of these maps are updated simultaneously. If not, then there should be visible signs of the breaks in continuity. I remember earlier this year some guy was in the news because he passed out drunk on his front lawn and it showed up on the satellite maps. When I heard this story, it seemed as though the event was relatively recent, which makes me wonder why his neighborhood seems to get updated more frequently than mine.

    Finally, in the opinion of this cartographile (don’t try looking it up - I just made the word up), maps are never off-topic.

  9. Phil:
    Did some HARD loking at the Google maps in many neighborhoods, and I've narrowed it down to the early FALL of 2007 (when city council members were running for office - case in point - Bob Enders signs are on MY lawn...LOL).
    (gotta give a H/T to Mr. Enders for that))
    Does that timeline seem to track with you, Phil?

  10. I don't know. Perhaps my recollection of when that house was torn down is wrong.
