Stinson's Day Nursery; 315 Dalman Ave

Kristina,

When you said "nursery," I was thinking screaming little brats, not plants. You were correct that it was very near my house, and I thought that might be an issue. People in this part of town don't usually like strangers taking pictures of their houses. Although Schenkel & Shultz would seem to disagree, I don't believe a person could legally stop someone from taking pictures of a building which is visible from a public street. However, the people I would be worried about here are not the type to really be too concerned about legalities.

Anyway, you will be pleased to see that the nursery is still standing (and apparantly unoccupied). The exterior appearance is not great, but it does appear to be structurally intact still. I was curious about the interior and I actually looked to see if I could find a way inside (without breaking anything), but they had it boarded up pretty good. It is located right next to a Mexican restaraunt which appears to have way more parking space than it needs.

If you look at the last photo you'll see that it is currently for sale. So, if you're looking for an excuse to move back to Fort Wayne, here it is! Better hurry though. I had to pick that sign up and re-plant it in the ground for my photo. I'm sure this has resulted in them being flooded with offers now.

  1. Phil - first - thank you. I really appreciate you going to take pictures of my first school - yes - it was my "nursery" school.

Now...to attempt to tell you how I feel by looking at these pictures.

I have a huge pit of sadness stuck in my tummy.

I think I'll be in town on May 16 and maybe the 17th. Maybe I can arrange with the seller to take pictures of the inside - before I forget everything I ever knew about it :(.

  2. Kristina,

The house is listed by REMAX. Given that the sign was lying on the ground, I really doubt if it is considered one of their top priorities.

You could contact them to see if they'd let you in. The sign had no number on it, but they have several numbers listed here in Ft. Wayne. You might try their south office (436-6363).

You could lie and pretend like you wanted to buy it. Or, you could ask to take the photos for your blog and put a link to their own site with your post. Free advertising (in two major cities), in exchange for an hour of their time.

I wish I had time to help with this, but I am too busy right now.

  3. Kristina,
When did you go there? I went to that daycare center too, from circa 1984 to 1990. I remember the merry-go-round in the basement, that coin-operated riding horse that didn't work anymore, and the nap time cots.

  4. Did you have to pay a quarter to use the cots, or were they free?

  5. The cots were free. Naptime was manditory for preschool age children. The "big kids" (age 5 and up) did not have to take naps.

We sat on the horse for free, too.
