We Interrupt the Regularly Scheduled Program…

…to provide a commentary on Kristina Frazier-Henry’s “Child of the Fort

Kristina,

I grew up in Marion and didn’t move to Fort Wayne until my early 20’s. It is always frustrating when I’m talking with the natives here and they say “Remember…?” Well actually no, I don’t remember, because I’m a foreigner. Your blog is educating me about what I missed. Here is some feedback for some of your previous posts. I don’t know how to add pictures on a comment, so I’ll just post it here for you to view.

Enjoy,
Phil

Regarding your Special Request
814 Clay Street & 808 Clay Street: This first picture is of the south-west corner of Clay & Berry. I think that is the correct location, but I could not confirm this as they do not put addresses on parking lots.

This second photo is of the south-west corner of Clay & Wayne, and it might be the location you were looking for. I could not find an address anywhere on this building.

Here are several photos of the Sheridan Court Apartments.

I see that your Main Street photos were already covered on A Beautiful City

Apparently I can only add five photos per post, so I will continue this on the next two posts.

  1. Dearest Phil,

There are tears in my eyes. I'm overcome because these pictures mean a lot to me.

The Sheridan Court Apartments are where my grandparents lived right before they moved to Third Street. We would go in that center door and up the stairs to the right. There were some really nice, classy people who lived in this building. Of course that was 30 years ago - I hope that it is still occupied by decent folks.

  2. The Clay street pictures....the apartment building I used to live in (I just posted two pictures of me and my mom/dad - inside - not that you can see much)....it appears the building is now a parking lot!

Around the corner from Clay street, used to be Noah's Diner (which is now called Cindy's Diner I guess). Best breakfast that a toddler could EVER get...oh...next to the donuts from Murphy's!

  3. P.S. It's weird that people say "remember when" to you re: Fort Wayne. I'm not sure exactly where you live in FW but I'm glad that people have great memories that they share with you about what used to be. We had some good things gonna on - especially on the South Side (which now - aside from priviledge Aboite?) is just not the same (so I hear).

Soon - I'll be chatting about Southtown Mall. Oh man - it was a GREAT place to go. And now? It's what? A pile of nothing...?

  4. Southtown Mall is now a Wal-Mart and a Menards. They just opened last year. They are hoping to use that to stimulate the area, but right now there's not much else there.
