Things have been unusually calm in my neighborhood lately. There is still drug and other suspicious activities going on, but it is much more low-key than any time in recent memory. We are far enough into the season now that there should be large groups of people loitering in front of my house (and in my yard) for several hours each day. There should be people screaming obnoxiously every time a car passes by, and there should be many more reports of shots fired.
I have to admit that I hold FWPD largely responsible for the changes here. In years past, it was the gangs who seemed to control my neighborhood, and the police department’s ineffective manner of dealing with this problem was laughable. But now, they seem to be giving this neighborhood the attention it deserves. Mind you, I do not expect FWPD to be here 24/7. But when things are as out of control as they were before, they need to maintain a strong presence until things quiet down.
Yesterday, I worked in my back yard from about two in the afternoon until about ten in the evening. I’ll give a brief account here of what I witnessed during the day. After reading this, you should understand two things. First, when the police take a proactive approach, they keep the trouble-makers on the run. And second, you should now understand why I have no need for cable television. If I get bored, all I have to do is step outside.
My Report for April 27, 2009
15:02 PC (Police Car) # 1 drives south on Warsaw Street.
15:07 PC-1 drives south on Warsaw (again).
15:50 PC-2 (Officer Rice) drives north on Warsaw.
16:15 PC-3 drives west on Suttenfield Street.
16:43 PC-4 drives south on Warsaw.
17:23 PC-2 drives north on Warsaw, then west on Suttenfield.
17:40 PC-2 parks on Warsaw, just north of my house, and facing south.
17:50 PC-5 drives north on Warsaw and stops at intersection for a couple minutes before heading west on Suttenfield. Just after this officer turned, some guy came walking around the corner saying “Man this place is hot. I gotta get out of here.” He was running south, towards Pontiac Street when he passed my back yard and noticed me. He stopped to ask if I wanted to buy a nail gun from him. PC-2 was still parked with the camera facing us, so just for fun I thought about asking him to bring the nail gun to me. Instead, I just said “No, I’m good.” He shouted something about me being a racist as he left.
18:00 After being parked and watching the area for about twenty minutes, PC-2 left.
18:05 PC-2 drives west on Suttenfield, then turns south on Warsaw.
18:10 PC-5 drives south on Warsaw.
19:00 PC-2 drives west on Suttenfield, then turns south on Warsaw.
19:10 The YMCA graffiti removal van stopped and cleaned the one-way signat the SE corner of intersection. I thought about asking them if they could do anything about the gang tags that have been painted on the public sidewalk in front of my house. But I really didn't want to see them get shot, so I kept my mouth shut.
20.20 A crowd began gathering behind my shed and I looked to see that Officer Rice had stopped a truck in the alley behind and a bit to the west of my house. The truck was driven by Neil, who had passed through my intersection about six times during the past several hours. Apparently, he was looking for a “friend.”
Another officer was also present and they spent about fifteen minutes searching Neil’s truck. They had probably searched his person first, but I arrived after it was already in progress. The police found nothing, and Neil was released. While the two police cars remained parked in the alley for another ten minutes, the man drove his truck the wrong way down Suttenfield Street a half block and parked. He then walked to the corner in front of my house where a large group of drug dealers had begun congregating. Neil and the others complained for a while about being harassed by the police before they all left.

Although this was the last time I saw any police in the area yesterday, I also noticed that Neil did not return again to look for his “friend.” I think I’m going to buy Officer Rice and the rest a box of doughnuts.
Keep in mind, that all this is just what I observed from being in my back yard all day. I heard from a few neighbors that there was a heavy police presence throughout the neighborhood all day long, so I’m sure there was much more going on that what my limited observations indicate.
Below is the FWPD's account of what was going on in my neighborhood yesterday:
09F054102 13:50:50 33,34 22XX HANNA ST S & CREIGHTON AVE E
09F054214 17:20:49 102,TX THREATS 4XX SUTTENFIELD AVE E
09F054167 15:59:22 1 MEET 3XX SUTTENFIELD AVE W
09F054155 15:40:05 43 DISTURBANCE 4XX TABER ST E
09F054252 18:08:08 911 HANG UP 36XX WARSAW ST
09F054317 20:08:01 48,36 25XX WARSAW ST & SUTTENFIELD ST E
I'm guessing that the last item in this report was their seach of Neil's truck. The alley doesn't really have an address, but Signal-48 is "Suspicious person" and Signal-36 is "Parked Vehicle - Occupied."
